STSA – Historical Overview

Secondary Technical School Awo-Omamma (STSA) is the second institution for post-primary education in Awo-Omamma and among the leading in this level of education in the entire Imo State of Nigeria. Founded in 1977, STSA was the second secondary school established in Awo-Omamma town: the first was Comprehensive Secondary School Awo-Omamma – formerly the Awo-Omamma Education Project (AEP). The initial teeming student population, given the high crave for education among the people of Awo-Omamma and its environs, and the inadequate availability of classrooms to accommodate the students, compelled the administrators of the school and the state education authorities to split the students into two, with STSA retaining one part while the other was used to found the Ubogwu Commercial Secondary School that incidentally became the third secondary school in the town. It is worth noting that, albeit having seen numerous amazing principals since its foundation, the pioneer principal was the late Reverend Ahumibe, whereas Mrs N. N. Ukeomah is the incumbent.

As its popularity grew

As its popularity grew tremendously from inception, STSA became the secondary school of choice for most prospective students from the then Oru LGA (presently comprising the Oru East and Oru West LGAs, respectively) in particular and the entire Imo State at large. Majority of the outside students then came from the neighbouring towns of Amiri, Eziama Obieator, Otulu and several sister towns in Oru (both East and West); including Akatta, Egbu, Mgbidi, Omuma, and Ozara (to mention but a few), as well as from the Owerri area of the state. There were also many students from the then Anambra State, especially from the nearby Amorka, Uli, and Ihiala communities, and from as far as Nnnewi and Onitsha and their neighbours.

As would be expected, given the students’ pedigree and academic excellence over the years, Secondary Technical School Awo-Omamma, without doubt, has produced some of the top-class individuals of our time; including academic professors, medical doctors, engineers, accountants, journalists, politicians, high-ranking military and police personnel, business people, and philanthropists. With the unmatched excellent qualities of the incumbent teachers and their students, we strongly believe that more will join the ranks of great STSA old students. Apart from their enviable academic performance, STSA students have continually excelled in different other areas, including sports and march past (Recall that under the popular Mr. Uche, STSA made history in Oru as the best school in march past).

With the high-quality teachers and students in the school at present, there is a very strong belief that STSA will continue to outpace its contemporaries and rivals! God bless our Alma Mater!!
